Safeguarding Awareness Workshop

This workshop is designed to raise awareness of the need for safeguarding in sport, and in addition, workshop participants should gain a better understanding of their roles and responsibility in keeping children safe. The workshop utilizes small-group activities and stimulating group discussions to help illustrate important concepts.

Duration: 3hrs

Objectives
On completion of the workshop, participants will:

  • Understand child protection and child safeguarding
  • Know about the four main focuses of safeguarding
  • Understand their role in safeguarding children
  • Know what to do if there is a suspected case of abuse

Foundations of Safeguarding

The Foundations of Safeguarding Workshop is a one-day workshop designed to give participants an understanding of basic safeguarding principles, and their roles in ensuring that children are able to enjoy physical activity safe from harm. The workshop also guides participants on "good practice" interactions with children and covers how they should deal with situations that raise ethical issues.

The workshop utilizes role playing, group discussions, information sharing, and sharing of personal issues to explore myths and misconceptions about appropriate behaviour between coaches and their wards.

Duration: 8hrs

The workshop is divided into two modules:

MODULE 1

  •  Being able to describe the different categories of child abuse, and the effects of abuse
  • Having a greater understanding of child abuse in sport in the region
  • Recognizing incidents of child abuse in sport

MODULE 2

  • Understanding principles of coaching in relation to Code of Practice for Coaches
  • Understanding the difference between Safeguarding and Child Protection
  • Recognising good practice and differentiating between poor practice and abuse in sport

Workshop for Designated Child Protection Officer

The Designated Child Protection Officer (DCPO) is a named and clearly identified person within a sport club, federation, or other sport organization with special responsibilities for child safeguarding. The DCPO is the first point of contact within the organization for anyone with child safeguarding concerns.

It is not the role of the DCPO to take responsibility for investigating allegations of poor practice or abuse, but rather to ensure that any concern brought to their attention is dealt with in accordance to the policies and procedures of the organization. This workshop assists DCPOs and potential DCPOs  to function effectively in this role.

Duration: 4hrs

Objectives
On completing the workshop participants will:

  • Be able to describe how they would respond to a child who discloses evidence of abuse
  • Identify the person(s) to whom they should report allegations or with whom the should share their concerns
  • Be better able to deal with difficult situations involving allegations against coaches, parents/caregivers, staff/volunteers or other children
  • Be able to describe the responsibilities of various agencies / organisations with responsibility for child welfare
  • Prepare themselves for the possibility of having to deal with future incidents of suspected abuse
